Join us for an inspiring evening with Garry from the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) as we dive into the fascinating world of mountain meteorology.
No matter what you enjoy doing in the outdoors or if it’s your area of work it’s undeniable that weather has a massive influence. Being able to read the weather and adapt what we do to make the most of any conditions is a key skill to thriving. During this relaxed evening we’ll break down the mechanics of Highland weather systems, how to read forecasts properly, and how to apply that knowledge on the ground – whether you’re on the hill, on the water, or just interested in finding out more about weather!

Garry Nicholson has been a key forecaster and director at the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) for over 15 years, bringing a degree in Meteorology and years of specialised operational forecasting experience to the role. Founded in 2003, MWIS produces authoritative, human-analysed mountain weather forecasts 365 days a year across eight UK mountain regions. Their forecasts are designed specifically to aid safety and decision-making by translating complex atmospheric models into practical hazards—such as freezing levels, cloud-base height, and localised wind-chill. Combined with Garry’s personal passion for hill walking, fell running, and outdoor sports, his deep understanding of how weather systems interact with Highland topography makes him uniquely qualified to translate complex meteorology into actionable field knowledge.
