Torridon’s Classic Climbs and Scrambles

(Five Days of Awe Inspiring Routes)

Enjoy the Magnificent Classic Climbs and Scrambles of Torridon

The Classic Climbs and Scrambles in Torridon are renowned for being some of the most magnificent and atmospheric rock routes in the UK. They are quite simply spectacular in just about every way. Experience huge, imposing and impressive mountain crags which top out onto the giant Torridon munros. As well as enjoying relaxed, coastal climbing in stunning locations. There is very little else in the UK that can rival the variety, quality and quantity of routes in the North West corner of Scotland. Yet, almost unbelievably, this area remains blissfully peaceful and calm. We rarely see another climber on many of these routes. Therefore, it’s also a great opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the experience, far, far away from the crowds.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for anyone looking to fully enjoy the classic climbing Torridon has to offer. Many of our clients have a background in scrambling or indoor or outdoor climbing. This course is 5 days and so a reasonable level of fitness is needed. However, as our example itinerary shows, we try to balance long mountaineering routes with shorter more relaxed days at lower level crags. This gives you the opportunity to recover the legs after the bigger days (or alternatively push your technical grade at an easy access crag for the super keen). There will be opportunities to learn or brush up on skills as each day progresses. So for the scrambler with little or no belaying experience, there is plenty of chance to learn/improve.

Inspiring location

Our Torridon’s Classic Climbs and Scrambles Course is located in the North West Highlands. This entire area truly is a mountaineers and climbers paradise with a diverse landscape that is world class. We will be spending much of the course in and around the Torridon mountains as well as using the local easy access crags along the coast. There are a few different options for villages to base yourself during this course. The smaller villages of Torridon and Kinlochewe are located right in the heart of the mountains. The largest village in the area is Gairloch, with excellent local facilities and amenities, including B&Bs, self catering, hotels, campsites, shops, pubs, takeaways, a pharmacy and a garage.

Open and Private Courses

We offer both open courses and private courses. On an open course you sign up to a date we’re offering and will meet with other people who book that same course. For private courses you will book a course specifically for you and can choose a date that suits.

Itinerary

Please read our example itinerary below to give you an idea of how the course may be organised. Please do be aware that we may change the order of the days to make best use of the weather or to better match the needs of the group. The routes listed are just an example of what we may choose, but we have a fantastic range of routes to choose from. So our route selection entirely depends on the individual circumstance of the week, therefore each course will be unique.

Day One: Mountain Scrambles

Today we will ease into the course with some classic grade 2/3 scrambling. This will give you an opportunity to gain confidence in the rock and to refresh your own movement skills. Our aim of today really is to simply enjoy one of the world class scrambling routes (or combination of routes) in superb surroundings.

Examples of where we may go today:

  • A combination of the classic scrambles on Beinn Eighe, including Long Stroll Slab, The North Ridge of Spidean Coire Nan Clach followed by The Black Carls.
  • The South Ridge of Mullach an Rathain followed by a traverse on The Am Fasarinen Pinnacles on Liathach.

Day Two: Cragging Classics

After a long day yesterday, today we will head to a lower level and easy access crag. The shorter walk will help to conserve some energy for the coming day. There are plenty of exceptional venues to choose from and an array of starred routes to be climbed. Over the course of the day there will also be a chance to learn or brush up on some or your trad climbing skills, e.g. belaying, removing and placing gear, abseiling. Today’s aim is to climb a great selection of starred routes with the opportunity to learn or practise some skills as appropriate to your experience.

Examples of where we may go today:

  • Aztec Tower near Gairloch
  • Raven’s Crag near Badachro

Day Three: Big Mountaineering Route

Today we will head out on a classic. big, mountaineering adventure. Expect a long and full day out in the mountains as we enjoy one of the best climbs in the UK of around grade Diff.

Examples of where we may go today:

  • East Buttress on Beinn Eighe
  • Northern Pinnacles of Liathach

Day Four: Class Coastal Climbs

Today we will head to a different low level crag for a second day of quick access climbing. We will opt for something a little steeper to try out some more challenging but equally brilliant routes (possibly up to grade VS). Our aim for today is to recover energy from yesterday while trying out some more technical climbing. Many of the crags in the area are in extremely scenic settings, giving you the chance to appreciate the exquisite surroundings at the same time.

Examples of where we may go today:

  • Diabaig

Day Five: Mountain Climb

Today we will head out to climb yet another of the North West’s magnificent, classic multi pitch mountain climbs. This time we might up the grade slightly and tackle a route of around grade Severe. So expect another long, full day out in the mountains as this time we enjoy one of the best severe grade climbs in the UK!

Examples of where we may go today:

  • The Cioch Nose – Applecross
  • Pigotts Route – Beinn Eighe
