Join Garry from the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) and Ollie from Climb Torridon for an immersive, practical day dedicated to winter weather, condition analysis, and mountain decision-making.
By combining MWIS’s meteorological expertise with Climb Torridon’s local mountaineering knowledge, this course delivers in-depth insight into making the absolute most of your time in the mountains. Alongside core theoretical concepts, the day features a heavy practical focus and we’ll travel on grade 1 winter terrain, analyzing real-time conditions directly on the mountainside and seeing how climbs and routes become in condition.
We’ll start with a weather briefing from Garry at MWIS, covering what the weather is doing now, where it’s heading, and what to look out for on the hill. Bring your questions, it’s very much a conversation.
After the briefing we’ll travel to the mountains, kit up and head out into grade 1 winter terrain. We’ll look at the conditions around us and what they mean for climbers, including:
By the end of the day, we want you to really understand what makes good conditions and how to adapt when things aren’t quite what you expected. You’ll know the science behind good decisions, and you’ll have a clear sense of what makes a route properly fun to climb.
We’ll finish with a round-up and a chance to ask anything we haven’t covered.
We’ll shape the day around the conditions we find, so you get the most out of it.
Please note: The precise breakdown of skills covered will be dynamically adapted to maximize learning based on the conditions found on the day.
To get the most from this course you should already have some experience of winter walking, mountaineering or climbing and be competent to move without a rope on grade 1 snow slopes. If you’re unsure about this then get in touch and we’d be happy to discuss.
